To her amazement, the girl in front of her did nothing more than put the front strands of her hair behind her ear to demonstrate to Maria that she did not, in fact, have anything in her ears. It became increasingly evident what kind of person Maria was dealing with: she was simply ignoring her request.

Maria decided to ask her again just to be sure. Maybe the girl was just daydreaming and had been so absorbed in her thoughts that she hadn’t spotted her. “Hello? “Can you hear me?” she asked again, but she was ignored. Maria was now certain that the girl was merely pretending not to hear her.
