When it comes to presidential marriages, James Buchanan is the only president in the history of the United States who did not tie the knot during his time in office. However, it is possible that he was simply too engaged with his career and office to be concerned with his social life. It is unclear why the 15th president chose to remain unmarried.

Prior to commencing his political career, he was a decorated military hero, earning the nickname “General” for his ability to command troops in the field. In the Mexican-American War, he was decorated for his bravery, and he went on to become the last Whig Party member to be elected President of the United States. From the time he began his service in March 1849, he dedicated a large amount of time and energy to the topic of slavery in America. Despite the fact that he had slaves of his own, he tended to lean more towards the anti-slavery side of the debate than the other way around. The admittance of New Mexico and California as states was something he campaigned for during his time as governor. Unfortunately, Taylor died of cholera while still in office, in July 1850, while still in command of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. His IQ was 139.8 when measured against other presidents who have held the office of president since the beginning of time.
