Mr. Rudall told Christopher that they were undoubtedly in the middle of a gold mine at the time. He couldn’t take his eyes away from the gleaming surfaces. Both of them were aware that the gold in the area had not been tampered with. It was also clear that the miners they had employed there had abandoned the site rather than completing their mission. But why would they do such a thing in the first place?

At the turn of the century, Mr. Rudall became aware of all the rumors about the failed gold mines. He didn’t know if they were trustworthy, however. He had never been inside a gold mine before this one. Christopher couldn’t think of a reason why the gold mine had to be stopped halfway through the job. He was, however, interested in reading more about the tunnel’s past.
