Stacy, on the other hand, wasn’t discouraged. She thought back on all the gullible previous owners who had, out of grief, given Benji to the shelter. She was committed to giving this child a happy and healthy life. She had to persuade her parents to let her get a dog because she was still living with them, but she didn’t realize what her actions would lead to. She was pleasantly surprised to learn that they were genuinely supportive despite her worries that they might not like the idea. They were anticipating Stacy’s departure, so they must have already talked about getting a dog.

Due to the completion and organization of all relevant papers, Stacy was given permission to take Benji home with her that day. Benji was going through the same stages of his life for the twelfth time at this point. When he was led out of his cage, he always seemed unconcerned. On the walk back to his house, Benji didn’t give Stacy a single glance. She knew it would take a lot of work to rebuild this poor puppy’s faith in people and turn him back into the happy, contented dog he once was. Stacy was first confident she could finish the job, but she soon realized her optimism was misplaced.
