He wanted nothing more than to help the baby seal, which he could only do if he knew what had happened while he was not working. “Uh, yes,” his boss started. It was evident he was looking for the appropriate words to express something difficult. “What is it, boss?” John inquired, apprehensive.

“I’m sorry, but I have to let you go,” his supervisor eventually explained. John was stunned. “What do you mean?” he inquired, slightly surprised. His supervisor groaned, “You have until tomorrow to get your things.” It felt like getting hit in the gut. John stood silently, attempting to process what had just transpired. “I’m fired?!” he finally said.
