Once inside, John felt a rush of old comfort mixed with a gnawing remorse over deceiving Susan. He looked around, almost expecting to be caught at any time. Susan gazed at him, expecting him to lead the way to his old workplace. John realized he needed to move quickly; his true purpose had nothing to do with forgotten goods on a desk.

John’s next issue was to end his relationship with Susan without raising suspicion. He murmured hastily, “Actually, I need to hit the bathroom first.” Before Susan could offer to wait, John darted away, leaving her in the corridor. He disliked lying to Susan, but it was necessary for his purpose. Now he just needed a moment to consider his next action.
