“This has to be some kind of mistake,” Maria muttered under her breath, her mind clinging to denial. She couldn’t wrap her head around the idea that her grandmother, the woman who had raised her with so much love, could have been involved in something like this. “My grandmother wasn’t a thief,” she said aloud, her voice trembling with emotion. “I can’t believe she would steal from anyone, let alone from you.”
