Construction Of The Canal
The canal’s construction was authorized to begin in 1802 by Napoleon I, the French emperor. Paris had a community of about 550,000 people at the time. The number did not seem to be going down any time soon. Napoleon said that the waterway would provide fresh water to the city and improve the people’s general well-being.
