It had to be a huge day. After all, you don’t need to see the Canal Saint-Martin every day to appreciate it. People were awestruck by what they were accomplishing. The canal’s bottom was strange to see. Their interest was piqued by what they saw on the canal’s surface.

The Living Things In The Water
The workers had to drain the canal until just 50 centimeters of water remained. They waded across the river, searching for objects and living “things” that had taken up residence there. The working party caught a total of five tons of carp, cod, and bream! They then relocated the fish to more suitable breeding grounds. Before relocating the fish, they carefully weighed and labeled it. Even if the new location wasn’t ideal for them, it was always preferable to the alternative.
