After establishing themselves as undisputed kings of complex rock music in 1987, Guns’n’Roses, fronted by the lithe and limber, controversial (but not just for wearing cycle shorts on stage) Axl Rose, rose to undisputed kings of complex rock music in 1989. “Appetite for Destruction” has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, with the follow-up “Use Your Illusion” selling an additional 35 million copies worldwide. Rose was well-known at the time for igniting riots and hurling liquor bottles at audiences during live performances, in addition to having a powerful vocal range. However, due to personal differences, the project came to a screeching halt very fast. The band went on a lengthy break before releasing the album “Chinese Democracy,” which did not perform as well as their label had hoped given the band’s previous success.
