She suggested having a ‘housewarming’ party to take my stepfather off guard before making the announcement. “It’s perfect!” she cried, her enthusiasm infectious. “He won’t suspect a thing if it’s all framed as a celebration.” The notion was excellent. A housewarming celebration would divert his focus and throw him off guard. Furthermore, it was the type of gathering where everyone essential would be present, making the disclosure even more powerful. I couldn’t help but smile at the cleverness behind it.
