Her Role
To become king of England, Edward VIII needed to occupy the throne, which was then done by his father, George V, in the year of 1936. Evidently, on the surface, though, he was in love with Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. On the other hand, the British government and the Church of England had both disagreed about the marriage of his wife and the King.

Speculations
A single woman of divorce was regarded as undesirable as a marriage prospect. The true reason Edward decided to give up the throne was that he couldn’t bear being exposed to criticism! A sovereign monarch should not have taken this decision for more than a year in normal circumstances. In Edward’s view, the woman he considered that “the heavy weight of duty and duties of a king” were too much for him to bear, but the love of his wife provided him with the encouragement he needed to overcome that.
